The cooled reaction mixture was adjusted to ~pH=12 with 1M sodium hydroxide aqueous solution and extracted with EtOAc (50 mL x 3). The aqueous layer was adjusted to ~pH=4 with 1M HC1 aqueous solution and extracted with EtOAc (50 mLx4). The extracts was dried over Na2SC>4, filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by chromatography on silica (petroleum ether : EtOAc =10: 1) to provide the title compound. LRMS m/z (M+H) 196.0 found, 196.0 required.

Once the aldehyde was added the reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature. After 3 hours, the reaction was quenched by pouring it into a saturated solution of aqueous NH4Cl. The aqueous portion was extracted with EtOAc in portions, 7*400 mL. The combined organics were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to dryness to give a brown oil. Chromatography on silica gel (10% acetone-DCM increasing to 50% acetone and increasing to 10% MeOH-DCM) provided the title compound as an amber solid.
