Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR, KBr, cm-1) spectra: 3374, 3417 (w, nuNH2), 3335 (m, nuH2O), 1608 (m, deltaNH2), 1558 (m, nuC-N), 1475 (s, nuC-N), 1382 (m, nuC-N-C), 1070 (m, nuC-N), 688, 773 (w, deltaN-C-N). Elemental analyses (EA; C2H4N5Li, 105.06): found: C 13.22, H 2.20, N 78.42%; calculated: C 13.20, H 2.22, N 76.96%. High-resolution mass spectra [HRMS-electrospray ionization (ESI)]: m/z: [M+H+] calcd. for C2H5LiN5: 106.0700, found: 106.0700.

EXAMPLE 5 Preparation of crude Anastrozole:To the title compound of example 2 (5Og) in dry DMF (250ml) anhydrous potassium carbonate (26g) and triazole sodium salt (232 g) are added and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 45 min. Worked up the reaction mixture by adding water (750 ml) and extracting with toluene (3 x 300ml). Combined toluene layer is washed with water ( 1 x300ml).The washed toluene layer is dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate, filtered and evaporated toluene to obtain crude anastrozole (42g) having isomeric impurity 4.52%.EXAMPLE 6Preparation of crude Anastrozole: To the title compound of example 2 (5Og) in dry DMF (250ml) anhydrous potassium carbonate (26g) and triazole sodium salt (232 g) are added and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 45 min. Worked up the reaction mixture by adding water (950 ml) and extracting with toluene (3 x 300ml). The washed solution was dried with sodium sulfate, and the dried solution was filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to provide an off-white solid. The solid was suspended in a mixture of heptanes and isopropyl acetate (5: 1, 600 mL). The mixture was filtered and the filter cake was washed with heptanes-isopropyl acetate (5: 1). The solids were collected and dried under vacuum to afford the title compound as a white solid.
