The self-assembly of triazole amphiphiles was examined in solution, the solid state, and in bilayer membranes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments show that stacked protonated triazole quartets (T-4) are stabilized by multiple strong interactions with two anions. Hydrogen bonding/ion pairing of the anions are combined with anion-pi recognition to produce columnar architectures. In bilayer membranes, low transport activity is observed when the T-4 channels are operated as H+/X- translocators, but higher transport activity is observed for X- in the presence of the K+-carrier valinomycin. These self-assembled superstructures, presenting intriguing structural behaviors such as directionality, and strong anion encapsulation by hydrogen bonding supported by vicinal anion-pi interactions can serve as artificial supramolecular channels for transporting anions across lipid bilayer membranes.

In the present study, a rapid, less expensive, clean and environmental friendly route to synthesis new pyrazoles, pyrazolopyridazines and condensed pyrimidines was developed via grinding of 2-(3-(dimethylamino)acryloyl)-3H-benzo[f]chromen-3-one (1) with different reagents. All the new compounds were characterized and established using elemental analysis and spectral data. Eight compounds were selected for in vitro antiproliferative against different human cancer cell lines entitled melanoma, cancers of the lung, leukemia, breast, brain, colon, prostate, ovary and kidney by the USA NCI. A novel, eco-friendly and fast route has been developed for the synthesis of new and known triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin fused chromone derivatives via a one pot three-component reaction of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazoles, aromatic aldehydes and 4-hydroxycoumarin in aqueous medium at room temperature. These reactions are catalyzed by MCM-41-HWO4 as a safe and recyclable mesoporous solid acid. It combines successfully the synergistic effect of green chemistry with nanocatalysis. The yields are high and the products were characterized by H-1 NMR, (CNMR)-C-13 spectra and elemental analysis.

A P/N-containing flame retardant (PPT) constructed by phosphaphenanthrene, phosphonate, and triazole groups was successfully synthesized and used as a reactive co-curing agent for epoxy resin (EP). The curing behavior, thermal property, combustion behavior, and flame retardant mechanism of EP thermosets were comprehensively investigated. According to the analysis of DSC and TGA, PPT accelerated the crosslinking reaction and enhanced the charring ability for EP thermosets at high temperature. The results of combustion test indicated that PPT endowed epoxy thermoset with outstanding flame retardancy. When the phosphorus content was 0.71 wt%, EP/DDS/PPT-2 achieved a LOI value of 33.2% and passed V-0 rating in UL-94 test, and its peak heat release rate and total heat release were decreased by 63.7 and 30.5%, respectively, relative to EP/DDS. Moreover, the FIGRA of EP/DDS/PPT-2 was reduced from 9.7 to 3.5 kW m(-2) s(-1), manifesting the significantly improved fire safety of EP thermoset. The flame retardant mechanism was summarized as two parts: (a) the barrier effect of continuous phosphorus-rich char layers in condensed phase, (b) the quenching effect of phosphorous radicals and diluting effect of nonflammable gases in gaseous phase.

As the use of the new insensitive munitions compound 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) increases, wastewaters, runoff and groundwater containing NTO will be generated. Little is known about the fate of NTO during biological wastewater treatment. The objective of this study was to explore the ability of wastewater sludges to promote the biotransformation of NTO. Three different sludges, i.e., anaerobic granular sludge, anaerobic digested sludge, and return activated sludge, were used to study the biotransformation of NTO under anaerobic conditions. Three different electron donor amendments were compared- hydrogen, ethanol, and acetate. Mixed microbial communities in each of the three sludge sources were effective in the reductive biotransformation of NTO. 3-amino-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (ATO) was observed as the major product of NTO biotransformation. The highest maximum specific rate of NTO reduction, about 120 mg NTO/g volatile suspended solids/d, was observed in anaerobic granular sludge with hydrogen or ethanol supplied as electron donors. NTO biotransformation to ATO by anaerobic digested sludge was also studied under denitrifying conditions. In this case, reduction of NTO started only after complete denitrification of added nitrate. An important implication of this paper is that sludge from wastewater treatment plants can rapidly and readily reduce NTO to ATO. [GRAPHICS] .

In this work, the coordination-based energy sacrificial bonds have been constructed in the interphase between lignin and polyolefin elastomer to prepare high performance lignin-based thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). The strength and toughness of lignin-based TPEs can be adjusted by choosing different nitrogen heterocyclic compounds as reactive assistants and Fe3+ or Zr2+ as metal coordination centers. It was demonstrated that 3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole with three nitrogen atoms in the heterocydic ring and one nitrogen branch chain could form the most efficient coordination bond system and generate the best mechanical performance. The system with ferric iron as coordination center exhibited better enhancement effect than divalent zinc. By adjusting the nitrogen-containing reactive additives or metal salts as coordination centers, the mechanical performance of the lignin-based TPE can be regulated, which provides a method for making green bio-composites with good strength and toughness, and also promotes the high value utilization of lignin in polymer materials. Two Cu(II) coordination complexes, C1 and C2 of the formula [Cu(4)2(H2O)(2)], have been prepared by reaction between CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O and 7-ethoxycarbonylmethyl-5-methyl-1,2,4[1,5-a]pyrimidine (L) in a 1:2 M:L molar ratio. The L molecule decomposes during the reaction process into 7-carboxy-5-methyl-[1,2,4]-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (4) through an intermediate, ethyl 2,2-dihydroxy-2-(5-methyl-[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-7-yl) acetate (5), which has been isolated and its crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray analysis of the single crystals of [Cu(4)(2)(H2O)(2)] obtained from the slow evaporation of EtOH and MeOH, separately, revealed the formation of solvent induced polymorphs C1 and C2, respectively. The primary supramolecular synthon for C1 and C2 are six membered ring, and square shaped hydrogen bonded architecture, respectively. The self-assembly of such synthons resulted in a two dimensional hydrogen bonded sheet supported by O-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions. In addition, the antioxidant properties of the ligands and its complexes were evaluated in vitro using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl acid, 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid radical scavenging methods and ferric reducing antioxidant power.

This study investigated the nutrient content and reuse potential of wastewater generated during hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgal biomass. The hydrothermal liquefaction reaction was tested at 270, 300, 330, and 345 degrees C to determine the effect of temperature on the formation of non-biodegradable dissolved organic nitrogen (nbDON). Total nitrogen, ammonium, color, and toxicity were selected as key characteristics for the reuse of hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater. Results indicated that a higher concentration of nbDON(5) (nbDON defined with a 5 day growth assay) and more diverse heterocyclic N-containing organic compounds were associated with greater toxicity as measured by a growth rate assay. For the tested temperature ranges, the total nitrogen content of the hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater slightly decreased from 5020 +/- 690 mg L-1 to 4160 +/- 120 mg L-1, but the % nbDON(5) fraction increased from 57 +/- 3 %DON to 96 +/- 5 %DON. The temperature of hydrothermal liquefaction reactions can be optimized to maximize carbon conversion and nitrogen recovery. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Oxidative stress biomarkers are powerful endpoints in toxicological research. Cellular reductive/oxidative balance affects numerous signaling pathways involving H2O2. Detoxification and control of H2O2 levels results mainly from catalase activity. The aim of this work was to develop a precise, simple, cost-effective microassay to measure catalase activity in small tissue samples and cell extracts. We developed a protocol that quantifies H2O2 decomposition by intrinsic catalase in biological samples. Catalase activity was calculated based on rate of decomposition of H2O2, following absorbance at 240 nm. We developed a multi-well spectroscopic approach, reducing sample quantity requirements and allowing simultaneous assessment of large number of samples. The protocol is sensitive across a wide range of catalase activity (11.5-7575 U). The assay presents a 95% confidence interval with an intra-assay coefficient of variation of 3.7%, an inter-assay coefficient of variation of 6.2% and good correlation with a commercial kit. The assay was established and validated for different biological samples, including sheep hepatic tissue and human tumor and non-tumor cell lines. This high-throughput method is robust, sensitive, time-saving and cost-effective, generating highly reproducible results with precision and good correlation with a commercial kit reinforcing the method’s validity for research and toxicological applications.
