Despite the richness of data collected on pesticide concentrations in ambient air in France, knowledge on this topic remains partial and heterogeneous in the absence of specific regulations. The population exposure remains thus difficult to estimate; therefore it was necessary to define modalities for implementing national monitoring of pesticides in ambient air in metropolitan France and in the overseas territories. The objective of this work was to identify which active substances (a.s.) have to be monitored in priority. As part of a collective expertise, a group of multidisciplinary experts has developed a method to rank active substances authorised as plant protection products, biocides and antiparasitic agents, which were available on the French market in 2015. A 3-steps approach has been developed. The first step consisted of a theoretical approach based on a hierarchy of substances according to four criteria: (a) national uses, (b) emission potential to the air, (c) persistence in the air, and (d) chronic toxicity. The three first criteria give information on their potential to be present in the atmosphere, and the fourth criterion allows to consider their potential of hazard. The second step was an observational approach based on existing database on pesticide air measurements in France. In the third step, both approaches were combined using decision trees to select priority pesticides. Among the 1316 a.s. first identified from the EU Pesticides database, 90 were selected, among which 43 required metrological and/or analytical development. The experts recommended confirming the relevance of performing a longer term monitoring of these a.s. after a one-year exploratory campaign. The proposed method is reproduceable, transparent, easy to update (e.g. in the light of a change in product authorization), and can be adapted to other agricultural and geographical conditions, and objectives (e.g. monitoring of the ecotoxicological effects of pesticides). In this work, Cladophora glomerata, a harmful seaweed, is converted into an olive-shaped magnetic biochar by a slow pyrolysis process catalyzed by iron. The resultant magnetic biochar has a high surface area of 296.4 m(2) g(-1) with a carbon-rich structure that makes it suitable to be used as an electrode in Li ion batteries. The catalytic pyrolysis process showed significant effect on steam reforming, ketonization and deoxygenation and/or denitrogenation reactions. The overall quality of the pyrolysis products increases: the gas contains a higher percentage of hydrogen (up to 22%), while the oil is enriched in furans (with a selectivity of about 14%). The electrochemistry behavior of magnetic biochar has been also evaluated, using galvanostatic charge discharge, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses. The electrochemical results indicated a higher initial specific discharge capacity (740 mAh g(-1)) and great cyclic stability for magnetic electrode as compared to the biochar electrode. Chemical transformations of chromone-3-carbonitrile (1) with some substituted hydrazines, namely, thiosemicarbazide, S-methyl/benzyldithiocarbazate, 7-chloro-4-hydrazinoquinoline, and 3-hydrazino-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine, led to substituted pyrazoles 2, 5-8. The novel 3-hydroxychromeno[4,3-b]pyrazolo[4,3-e]pyridin-5(1H)-one (13) was efficiently synthesized from the ring conversion of carbonitrile 1 with cyanoacetohydrazide. A mixture of chromeno[2,3-b]naphthyridine 14 and chromeno[4,3-b]pyridine 15 was obtained from base catalyzed transformation of carbonitrile 1 with malononitrile dimer. A diversity of novel annulated chromeno[2,3-b]pyridines 16-22 was also synthesized. Chromeno[2,3-b]pyrrole-2-carboxylate 23 was obtained from the reaction of carbonitrile 1 with ethyl chloroacetate. Structures of the new synthesized products were deduced on the basis of their analytical and spectral data.

Eight energetic salts with a gem-dinitro group based on 1,2,4-oxadiazole were developed. All of the structures were confirmed by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures of the pivotal intermediate 3-(chlorodinitromethyl)-5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (3), the potassium salt (4) and the hydrazinium salt (7). All of them are insensitive to impact (>40 J) and have higher energy levels than trinitrotoluene (TNT).

The novel flame retarded unsaturated polyester resins have been developed and prepared by introduction of high nitrogen content additives into the polymer matrix in order to verify their effectiveness in the formation of swollen carbonaceous char inhibiting the burning process of the polymer. The intumescent flame retardants (IFRs) based on mixture or metal complex were developed and characterized by particle size distribution, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis (CHN) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The evaluation of the efficiency of IFRs addition on the flammability and smoke emission of the unsaturated polyester resins (UP) was carried out using the fire hazard (UL-94), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter (CC) tests, as well as smoke density chamber tests. The volatile compounds evolved during the burning of materials were determined using a steady state tube furnace and a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer. Furthermore, the prepared materials were subjected to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis and water resistance tests. The mechanical properties of the materials were investigated using Shore D hardness and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA). The structural evaluation of the manufactured materials and samples after the cone calorimetry tests was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the incorporation of new intumescent flame retardants led to the formation of carbonaceous char layers’ inhibiting the decomposition process and limiting the smoke emission. The most promising results were obtained for the resin containing complex designated as ZN3AT, for which the highest reduction in maximum values of heat release rate (419 kW/m(2)) compared to unmodified polymer (792 kW/m(2)) were recorded. Apart from that, the prepared intumescent flame retardants affect the cross-linking process as well as the thermal and mechanical properties of the UP.

A colorimetric and visual assay is described for the herbicide aminotriazole (ATZ). It is based on the etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs) by iodine which is formed on oxidation of iodide via H2O2. Longitudinal etching of the AuNRs occurs quickly and is accompanied by a color change from dark blue to red. In the absence of ATZ and the presence of active catalase (CAT), H2O2 is quickly decomposed into water, and the AuNRs will not be etched. In thepresence of ATZ, CAT is partially deactivated, and this affects the amount of available H2O2 and, consequently, of the iodine. Hence, the color is significantly changed. The color changes can be easily detected with bare eyes. The assay has a linear response in the 5 to 70 mu M concentration range, with a detection limit of 1.3 mu M and high selectivity for ATZ. It was applied to the determination of ATZ in water and food samples.

Aminotriazole (AT), an organic heterocyclic compound, is an unselective herbicide used to deal with a large assortment of weeds by preventing the biosynthesis of carotenoids. It is a malignant agent to human beings as well as to animals. This study is focused on the nanomolar detection of AT with multiwalled carbon nanotubes along with calcium-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles adapted for a nano-composite dependent glassy carbon electrode (MWCNTs/Ca-ZnO/GCE). The developed MWCNTs/Ca-ZnO/GCE showed an excellent electrocatalytic response to AT in 3.0 pH of 0.2 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS). There was an increase in the peak current of AT, i.e., 7.726 mu A, with MWCNTs/Ca-ZnO/GCE when it was compared with the peak current of AT at the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE), 3.478 mu A, due to the semiconducting properties of the doped nanoparticles. Various techniques were employed to study the different parameters such as scan rate, pH variations, and concentration variations by cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) in order to probe the mechanism, number of participating electrons, type of process, detection limit, and quantification limit. The Ca-ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized at the proportion of 5.0% and these were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The developed sensor was applied for real sample analysis like soil and water by quantifying the AT in the samples and the output was found to be precise with good recovery results.

The mechanisms of binary catalyst therapy (BCT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are based on the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This ROS formation results from specific chemical reactions. In BCT, light exposure does not necessarily initiate ROS formation and BCT application is not limited to regions of tissues that are accessible to illumination like photodynamic therapy (PDT). The principle of BCT is electron transition, resulting in the interaction of a transition metal complex (catalyst) and substrate molecule. Mn-III-tetraphenylporphyrin chloride (MnClTPP) in combination with an ascorbic acid (AA) has been proposed as an appropriate candidate for cancer treatment regarding the active agents in BCT. The goal of this study was to determine whether MnClTPP in combination with AA would be a promising agent for BCT. The problem of used MnClTPP’s, low solubility in water, was solved by MnClTPP loading into PLGA matrix. H2O2 produced during AA decomposition oxidized MnClTPP to high-reactive oxo-Mn-V species. MnClTPP in presence AA leads to the production of excessive ROS levels in vitro. ROS are mainly substrates of catalase and superoxide dismutase (H2O2 and O-2(center dot-)). SOD1 and catalase were identified as the key players of the MnClTPP ROS-induced cell defense system. The cytotoxicity of MnClTPP-loaded nanoparticles (NPs) was greatly increased in the presence of specific catalase inhibitor (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3AT)) and superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) inhibitor (diethyldithio-carbamate (DDC)). Cell death resulted from the combined activation of caspase-dependent (caspase 3/9 system) and independent pathways, namely the AIF translocation to nuclei. Preliminary acute toxicity and in vivo anticancer studies have been revealed the safe and potent anticancer effect of PLGA-entrapped MnClTPP in combination with AA. The findings indicate that MnClTPP-loaded PLGA NPs are promising agents for BCT.

Cationic polymers are promising antibacterial agents because bacteria have a low propensity to develop resistance against them, but they usually have low biocompatibility because of their hydrophobic moieties. Herein, we report a new biodegradable and biocompatible chitosan-derived cationic antibacterial polymer, 2,6-diamino chitosan (2,6-DAC). 2,6-DAC shows excellent broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 8-32 mu g/mL against clinically relevant and multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria including Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Furthermore, 2,6-DAC shows an excellent synergistic effect with various clinically relevant antibiotics proved by decreasing the MICs of the ntibiotics against MDR A. baumannii and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus to <1 mu g/mL. In vivo biocompatibility of 2,6-DAC is proved by a dosage of 100 mg/kg compound via oral administration and 25 mg/kg compound via intraperitoneal injection to mice; 2,6-DAC does not cause any weight loss and any significant change in liver and kidney biomarkers or the important blood electrolytes. The combinations of 2,6-DAC together with novobiocin and rifampicin show >2.4 log(10) reduction of A. baumannii in murine intraperitoneal and lung infection models. The novel chitosan derivative, 2,6-DAC, can be utilized as a biocompatible broad-spectrum cationic antimicrobial agent alone or in synergistic combination with various antibiotics.

A Schiff base ligand HL has been synthesized by the condensation of an equimolar amount of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde and 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and ESI-mass spectrometry. The metal complexes 1-4 have been synthesized by the reaction of ligand with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) chlorides in ethanol in the molar ratio 1:1. All the metal complexes 1-4 were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, electronic spectra, IR, and EPR spectra. TGA has been done to check the stability of the synthesized Schiff base ligand HL and its metal complexes 1-4. Spectral data reveals that the ligand HL acts as uninegative tridentate for metal complexes. The geometries of synthesized ligand and its metal complexes were optimized by using Gaussian 09 W program. On the basis of spectral characterization, octahedral geometry has been allocated for Co(II), tetrahedral for Ni(II), tetragonal for Cu(II) and tetrahedral for Zn(II) complexes. The DNA binding studies of metal complex have been investigated by UV absorbance, fluorescence and CD spectrometry. UV absorbance binding studies show that metal complex 1-3 could bind to ctDNA significantly and the results obtained were consistent with the fluorescence and CD spectra. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V.
