15.38 g (67.79 mmol) of 3,5-dibromo-1H-1,2,4-triazole, 24.80 g (203.38 mmol) of phenylboronic acid, 7.83 g (6.78 mmol) of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0), and 18.74 g (135.59 mmol) of potassium carbonate were added to a mixed solution including 170 mL of tetrahydrofuran and 70 mL of water and stirred under reflux. After the reaction was completed, the reaction product was cooled to room temperature, and an aqueous solution layer was removed therefrom by extraction. The resultant was filtered under reduced pressure through silica gel, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The product obtained therefrom was separated by silica gel column chromatography to obtain 9.20 g (yield of 61%) of Intermediate (A). (0267) LC-Mass (Calcd: 221.10 g/mol, Found: M+1=222 g/mol)

In a 50 mL round bottomed flask, 3,5-dibromo-lH-l,2,4-triazole (Int-1, 1.00 g, 4.41 mmol) was dissolved in DMF (13 mL) and the solution was cooled to 0-5 C (ice bath). Sodium hydride (55% dispersion in mineral oil, 231 mg, 5.29 mmol) was added in portions and the resulting mixture was stirred for 5 min at 0-5 C and for 15 min at room temperature. After that, propyl methanesulfonate (1.24 g, 1.08 mL, 8.82 mmol) was added dropwise at room temperature. The resulting mixture was stirred for 15 h at room temperature, followed by 1 h at 100 C. After that, it was concentrated in vacuo, the residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (50 mL) and water (50 mL), the aqueous phase was extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 50 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (sodium sulfate) and concentrated in vacuo, the residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, 70 g, eluting with ethyl acetate / n-heptane, gradient 0: 100 to 28:72 v/v) to yield the title compound as colorless oil (672 mg, 57%). 1H NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz): delta 0.97 (t, J= 7.4 Hz, 3 H), 1.85-1.98 (m, 2 H), 4.12 (q, J= 7.0 Hz, 2 H). MS (ES+) m/z 267.9, 270.0, 271.9 [M+H, 2 Br isotopes].

A mixture of 3,5-dibromo-1H-1,2,4-triazole (700 mg, 3.1 mmol), 2,2′-bipyridyl (60 mg, 0.39 mmol), copper(II) acetate (140 mg, 0.77 mmol), potassium carbonate (852 mg, 6.2 mmol) and cyclopropylboronic acid (795 mg, 9.3 mmol) was dissolved in toluene (5 mL) and water (1.5mL) and stirred at 70 C for 18 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to RT, quenched with NH4Cl (sat. aq.) and the products extracted in DCM. The combined organic fractions were dried with a phase separator and reduced in vacuo. The crude mixture was dissolved in DCM and dry-loaded onto silica. Purification via silica column chromatography eluting with 10-60% EtOAc in Pet. Ether afforded 5-dibromo-1-cyclopropyl-1,2,4-triazole and 1-allyl-3,5-dibromo-1,2,4-triazole (123 mg, 0.46 mmol, 15% yield) as an inseparable mixture. UPLC-MS (ES+, Method A): 1.52 min, m/z 267.9 [M+H]+

The title compound was isolated as a light yellow liquid (288 mg, 40.5 % yield). MS (ES+) m/z: 323.8 [(M+H)+].
