Human activities such as agriculture, aquaculture, and industry can lead to the pollution of coastal waters by trace organic contaminants (TrOCs), and the TrOCs can pose a threat to marine ecosystems. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of the TrOCs in coastal waters. Previous studies adopting conventional analytical methods have focused on a limited number of targets. Herein, a comprehensive and systematic determination was undertaken to target 484 TrOCs in the waters around the Liaodong Peninsula, China. Eighty-six TrOCs were detected at concentrations of up to 350 ng L-1, and 25 TrOCs were detected at a frequency of >50%. Pesticides were the predominant pollutants, occurring at high concentrations with large detection frequencies. Ecological risks were assessed for single pollutants and mixtures based on the risk quotient and concentration addition modeling, respectively. The detected pesticides posed relatively high risk to aquatic organisms, while pharmaceuticals, consumer products, and other pollutants posed little or no risk. TrOC mixtures posed extremely high risk to aquatic organisms, which represented a significant threat to the marine environment and local communities. The results described here provide useful information that can inform China’s Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Water Pollution. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Amitrole is reported as a novel kind of transparent poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) thermal stabilizer that has both excellent inhibition of zinc burning thermal stability and antibacterial ability in this paper, which provide the possibility of applying the whole PVC industry into medical and food packaging, artificial leather, wire and cable, indoor decoration, and so on. From the results of Congo red test, discoloration test, and dynamic thermal stability test, we could clearly find out that amitrole could effectively replace the unstable chlorine atom and inhibit zinc burning of transparent PVC, while the long-term stability should be improved. Next, the stabilization mechanism of amitrole was also confirmed. The antibacterial activity of amitrole was measured by the bacteriostatic ring experiments. It was observed that the PVC films had good antibacterial properties after modified by amitrole. At last, optimal design of the amitrole/ZnSt(2) (1:1)/ESBO formulation was studied, which have strong potential as thermal stabilizer to prepare super transparency and antibacterial PVC resin.

Five novel rhodium(II) complexes of general formula [Rh-2(mu-OOCCH3)(4)L-2], where L is a triazolopyrimidine derivative, in particular dimethyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (dmtp) for (1), 5,7-diethyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5a]pyrimidine (detp) for (2), 7-isobutyl-5-methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (ibmtp) for (3), 7-hydroxy-5methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (HmtpO) for (4) and 5,7-ditertbutyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (dbtp) for (5) are reported. These first representatives of paddle-wheel dirhodium complexes with triazolopyrimidines have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Three of the new complexes (1), (2) and (5) were thoroughly screened in vitro for their cytotoxicity against human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and L929 murine fibroblast cells. Favorably, they show significantly less effective inhibition on the cell growth of L929 than cisplatin under identical conditions. Complexes (1) and (5) display moderate cytotoxic activity (IC50 = 16.3-21.5 mu M) against MCF-7 cells which is induced via reactive oxygen species-independent pathways. Extensive studies of rhodium complexes (1), (2) and (5) against microorganisms have shown that the tested compounds exhibit antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) while (5) significantly inhibited the growth of Malassezia furfur. The highest antibacterial, and antifungal activity, was observed for (5).

Catalase (CAT) is a crucial enzyme to control the excess peroxisomal H2O2 produced during photorespiration. In many plant species, this enzymatic activity decreases in response to drought but its specific role in photosynthesis and redox metabolism is still poorly understood. In this study was tested the hypothesis that photosynthetic and oxidative changes induced by drought are dependent on CAT activity. For this, Jatropha curcas, a drought-tolerant species, was subjected to water deficit and CAT inhibition by a specific pharmacological inhibitor (3-AT), in order to decrease the activity of this enzyme to a similar level as compared to that exhibited by water deficit-treated plants. The CO2 assimilation and other photosynthetic-related parameters were decreased more intensively by drought as compared to plants exposed to 3-AT, whereas the photochemical efficiency of PSII remained unchanged in both conditions. Non-photochemical quenching was strongly increased in drought-treated plants, but only slightly increased in 3-AT treatment. Membrane integrity and lipid peroxidation were strongly increased in both treatments, while H2O2 content was increased only by drought imposition. Ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were increased in both drought and 3-AT treatments, but glycolate oxidase was strongly increased only in drought-stressed plants. The obtained results evidence that CO2 assimilation and oxidative protection in leaves of Jatropha curcas plants exposed to water deficit are greatly dependent on drought-induced CAT activity deficiency.

Purpose To investigate the added value of 6-(18F]-fluoro-L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (FDOPA) PET to radiotherapy planning in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Methods From September 2017 to December 2020, 17 patients with GBM received external beam radiotherapy up to 60 Gy with concurrent and adjuvant temozolamide. Target volume delineations followed the European guideline with a 2-cm safety margin clinical target volume (CTV) around the contrast-enhanced lesion+resection cavity on MRI gross tumor volume (GTV). All patients had FDOPA hybrid PET/MRI followed by PET/CT before radiotherapy planning. PET segmentation followed international recommendation: T/N 1.7 (BTV1.7) and T/N 2 (BTV2.0) SUV thresholds were used for biological target volume (BTV) delineation. For GTV-BTVs agreements, 95% of the Hausdorff distance (HD95%) from GTV to the BTVs were calculated, additionally, BTV portions outside of the GTV and coverage by the 95% isodose contours were also determined. In case of recurrence, the latest MR images were co-registered to planning CT to evaluate its location relative to BTVs and 95% isodose contours. Results Average (range) GTV, BTV1.7, and BTV2.0 were 46.58 (6-182.5), 68.68 (9.6-204.1), 42.89 (3.8-147.6) cm(3), respectively. HD95% from GTV were 15.5 mm (7.9-30.7 mm) and 10.5 mm (4.3-21.4 mm) for BTV1.7 and BTV2.0, respectively. Based on volumetric assessment, 58.8% (28-100%) of BTV1.7 and 45.7% of BTV2.0 (14-100%) were outside of the standard GTV, still all BTVs were encompassed by the 95% dose. All recurrences were confirmed by follow-up imaging, all occurred within PTV, with an additional outfield recurrence in a single case, which was not DOPA-positive at the beginning of treatment. Good correlation was found between the mean and median values of PET/CT and PET/MRI segmented volumes relative to corresponding brain-accumulated enhancement (r = 0.75; r = 0.72). Conclusion (18F)FDOPA PET resulted in substantial larger tumor volumes compared to MRI; however, its added value is unclear as vast majority of recurrences occurred within the prescribed dose level. Use of PET/CT signals proved to be feasible in the absence of direct segmentation possibilities of PET/MR in TPS. The added value of (18F)FDOPA may be better exploited in the context of integrated dose escalation.

Large amounts of effectors are secreted by the oesophageal glands of plant-parasitic nematodes, but their molecular mode of action remains largely unknown. We characterized aMeloidogyne incognitaprotein disulphide isomerase (PDI)-like effector protein (MiPDI1) that facilitates nematode parasitism. In situhybridization showed thatMiPDI1was expressed specifically in the subventral glands ofM. incognita. It was significantly upregulated during parasitic stages. Immunolocalization demonstrated MiPDI1 secretionin plantaduring nematode migration and within the feeding cells. Host-induced silencing of theMiPDI1gene affected the ability of the nematode to infect the host, whereasMiPDI1expression inArabidopsisincreased susceptibility toM. incognita, providing evidence for a key role of MiPDI1 inM. incognitaparasitism. Yeast two-hybrid, bimolecular fluorescence complementation and coimmunoprecipitation assays showed that MiPDI1 interacted with a tomato stress-associated protein (SlSAP12) orthologous to the redox-regulated AtSAP12, which plays an important role in plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses.SAP12silencing or knocking out inNicotiana benthamianaand Arabidopsis increased susceptibility toM. incognita. Our results suggest that MiPDI1 acts as a pathogenicity factor promoting disease by fine-tuning SAP-mediated responses at the interface of redox signalling, defence and stress acclimation in Solanaceae andArabidopsis.

Developing highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates is promising but challenging. In this work, a novel three-dimensional metal organic framework (MOF) with cylinder pore systems and unsaturated Zn sites has been demonstrated as potent candidate in CO2 fixation at mild and solvent-free conditions. The Zn(atz)(bdc)(0.5), where atz = aminotriazole and H(2)bdc = terephthalic, exhibits microporous nature that can regulate the catalytic interaction of active centers and substrates. The structure stability has been systematically investigated and proven to be sufficient for practical application. Furthermore, the cooperative effects of porosity, CO2 binding affinity, activation centers, and synergism with co-catalyst have been deeply investigated. Moreover, high propylene epoxide conversion (97%) and selectivity (> 99%) have been achieved at mild conditions (60 degrees C and 1 MPa) with excellent cycle stability. Owing to the well-defined pore system, an obvious substrates selectivity has been clearly observed. A possible catalytic mechanism has been proposed and verified by DFT calculations. Furthermore, the prepared Zn-MOF can also be used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the reaction of epoxides with alcohols to produce beta-alkoxy alcohol. [GRAPHICS] .

A series of 1,2,4-triazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives was designed, synthesized and screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities as well as their safety profile. Compounds 2b, 3a, 6b, 8b, 8c, 8h, 9a,b, 10b, 11a,b and 12a,b showed high activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria with MIC values ranging from 0.25 to 2.0 mu g/mL. Many compounds were safe with no cytotoxicity against human embryonic kidney and red blood cells at concentration up to 32 mu g/mL. Moreover, compound 9a showed the highest inhibitory activity against DNA Gyrase with IC50 = 0.68 mu M compared to ciprofloxacin IC50 = 0.85 mu M. The rice receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase 185 (OsRLCK185) interacts with the chitin receptor complex OsCERK1/CEBiP and positively regulates chitin-induced immune responses including MAP kinase activation, ROS production and defense gene expression. To elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of OsRLCK185-mediated immunity, we searched for interactors of OsRLCK185. OsDRE2a, rice homologs of the yeast Dre2 protein, were identified as novel interactors of OsRLCK185. OsDRE2a interacted with OsRLCK185 at plasma membrane. The conserved cysteine residues in CIAPIN1 domain of OsDRE2a were essential for tight interaction of OsRLCK185. OsDRE2a was phosphorylated by OsRLCK185. The expression of OsDRE2a and OsDRE2b was induced after chitin treatment. Reduction of OsDRE2a and OsDRE2b mRNA levels by RNA interference resulted in the decreased chitin-induced ROS production. Thus, it is likely that OsDRE2 regulates OsRLCK185-mediated immune responses.

Reactivity of the singlet oxygen (SO), which is assumed to be one of the important oxidizers in natural waters, towards to a set of persistent herbicides, was measured for the first time using time resolved luminescence technique.
