The recently reported UNIversal QUAsiChemical Segment Activity coefficient (UNIQUAC-SAC) model [developed by Haghtalab and Yousefi Seyf Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2015, 54, 8611] provides a practical thermodynamic framework to be used in VLE, LLE, and SLE calculations. The UNIQUAC-SAC model has the advantage of being independent of area (q) and volume (r) structural parameters used in the combinatorial part. While the UNIFAC or UNIFAC-DMD could not apply to the 47% (44 of 94) of the studied molecules because of the undefined groups. Here, the numbers of solvents with identified segment numbers were extended from 82 to 130 with a slight refinement to the previous values. The model parameters obtained via a large consistent set of VLE (isobaric and isothermal), and LLE experimental data. Also, the model was tested with pharmaceutical solubility experimental data in pure (94 solutes with 6210 solubility data), binary, and ternary solvents. The model provides a robust correlation of pharmaceuticals solubility in a mono-solvent and robust prediction of pharmaceuticals solubility in mixed solvents. The UNIQUAC-SAC model was successfully evaluated in solvent screening in cooling crystallization of ibuprofen and valsartan in both pure and binary solvents mixture (combined cooling and anti-solvent crystallization). The model with 130 solvents as a robust database provides a useful and practical thermodynamic tool in the conceptual design of pharmaceutical processes. Ten 5-functionalized derivatives of 1,3-oxazole-4-carboxylate and 1,3-oxazole-4-carbonitrile were synthesized and their antiviral activities against the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) were evaluated in vitro. Bioassays showed that seven compounds exhibited considerably higher antiviral activity (EC50:<0.05M) against a normal laboratory HCMV strain (AD-169) in human foreskin fibroblast cells than Ganciclovir (EC50=0.32M), an anti-HCMV agent in clinical use. Additionally, the HCMV-resistant isolate (GDGr K-17) was tested for sensitivity to 1,3-oxazole derivatives with most antiviral potency against the strain AD169. A one of them (5-((2-hydroxyethyl)(methyl)amino)-2-(4-methylphenyl)-1,3-oxazole-4-carbonitrile) showed very high potency (EC50:<0.05; CC50: >150 mu M, and SI50=3125) towards the resistant isolate compared to standard drugs Cidofovir (EC50=0.10 mu M, CC50: >30 mu M and SI50: <4). But, in contrast to the primary assays, the antiviral activity of these compounds against both the normal strain and the resistant isolate of HCMV were considerably less than one of Cidofovir in secondary assay. The construction materials that contacted with unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and the desorption solutions obtained when treating the contaminated surface of metals and alloys with water and reagents were studied by chromatography and mass spectrometry. Neutralization of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine was studied using ozone and shungite. Ozonation makes it possible to destroy the toxicant molecules chemically and physically adsorbed on the surface of metal constructions, due to which they can be reused and utilized. Shungite effectively adsorbs and catalytically decomposes not only unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and its transformation products, but also oligomer compounds formed during the storage of hydrazine fuel. Ozonation of spent shungite can increase the efficiency of destructive processes and completeness of its regeneration.

Primary aromatic amines (PAAs), as a class of persistent and highly toxic organic pollutants, have been posing a great threat to human health and the environment. Therefore, the design and preparation of a highly sensitive and selective luminescent probe to detect PAAs among various amines are important but challenging. In this work, by introducing electron-deficient monomer 4,4 ‘-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzaldehyde (BTDD) with an aggregation-caused quenching behavior into the 2D framework, fluorescent ultrathin covalent triazine framework (F-CTF) nanosheets were constructed. Compared with the aggregated BTDD monomer, the obtained F-CTF-3 nanosheet shows much higher fluorescence quantum yield due to the BTDD fragment being well dispersed in the 2D framework. The F-CTF-3 nanosheet exhibits high stability, high porosity, and high fluorescence performance and has a rich electron-deficient unit in the pore channel, making it an ideal platform for sensing electron-rich PAA molecules. In fact, the F-CTF-3 nanosheet shows high sensitivity and selectivity for PAA detection by fluorescence quenching, among various amines, covering some classic aliphatic amines, heterocyclic amines, secondary aromatic amines and tertiary aromatic amines. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first reported fluorescent sensor for selective sensing of PAAs among various amines. Moreover, F-CTF-3 exhibits unprecedented low detection limits of 11.7 and 1.47 nM toward phenylamine (PA) andp-phenylenediamine (PDA), respectively, surpassing all the reported fluorescent sensors. The combination of experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrates that the unique PAA detection performance of F-CTF-3 can be attributed to the static quenching process, which is confirmed by the formation of a ground-state fluorescence-quenched complex on account of the hydrogen bonding interactions between F-CTF-3 and PAAs. This work not only provides a thiadiazole-based 2D fluorescent organic framework nanosheet, but also an excellent fluorescent sensor with unexpected sensitivity and selectivity for PAA detection.

Six novel ruthenium(III) complexes of general formula [RuCl3(L)(3)] (1,3,5) and [RuCl3(H2O)(L)(2)] (2,4,6), where L stands for three different triazolopyrimidine-derived ligands, are reported. The compounds have been structurally characterized (IR, EPR, SCXRD), and their magnetic moments have been determined. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction study revealed a slightly distorted octahedral geometry of the Ru(III) complexes with mer configuration in 1 and 5, and fac configuration in 3. In 2 and 4, three chloride ions are in mer configuration and the two triazolopyrimidines are oriented trans mutually with the water molecule playing the role of the sixth ligand. All complexes have been thoroughly screened for their in vitro cytotoxicity against human breast cancer cell line MCF-7, human cervical cancer cell line HeLa, and L929 murine fibroblast cells, uncovering among others that the most lipophilic complexes 5 and 6, containing the bulky ligand dptp (5,7-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine), display high cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, and HeLa cells. Moreover, it was also revealed that during the interaction of the complexes 1-6 with the cancer MCF-7 cell line, reactive oxygen species are released intracellularly, which could indicate that they are involved in cell apoptosis. Furthermore, extensive studies have been carried out to reveal the mechanism by which complexes 1-6 interact with DNA, albumin, and apotransferrin. The biological studies were complemented by detailed kinetic studies of the hydrolysis of the complexes in the pH range 5-8, to determine the stability of the complexes in solution. In search of unprecedented tri and/or tetrapod pharmacophoric conjugates, a series of 32 new 4-ethyl-1H-benzo[b][1,4]diazepin-2(3H)-ones were synthesized and properly elucidated using MS, IR, NMR, and elemental analysis. In vitro investigation of 11 compounds of this series, using a panel of two human tumor cell lines namely; human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), and human colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116), revealed promising cytotoxic activities. Among all synthesized compounds, analogue 9 displayed maximum cytotoxicity with IC50 values of 16.19 +/- 1.35 and 17.16 +/- 1.54 mu M against HCT-116 and MCF-7, respectively, compared to standard drug doxorubicin.

Intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a reactive oxygen species, or the blockade of catalase (enzyme that degrades H2O2 into H2O and O-2) with icv injection of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATZ) reduces the pressor effects of angiotensin II also injected icv. In the present study, we investigated the effects of ATZ injected icv or intravenously (iv) on the pressor responses induced by icv injections of the cholinergic agonist carbachol, which similar to angiotensin II induces pressor responses that depend on sympathoexcitation and vasopressin release. In addition, the effects of H2O2 icv on the pressor responses to icv carbachol were also tested to compare with the effects of ATZ. Normotensive non-anesthetized male Holtzman rats (280-300 g, n = 8-9/group) with stainless steel cannulas implanted in the lateral ventricle were used. Previous injection of ATZ (5 nmol/1 mu l) or H2O2 (5 mu mol/1 mu l) icv similarly reduced the pressor responses induced by carbachol (4 nmol/1 mu l) injected icv (13 +/- 4 and 12 +/- 4 mmHg, respectively, vs. vehicle + carbachol: 30 +/- 5 mmHg). ATZ (3.6 mmol/kg of body weight) injected iv also reduced icv carbachol-induced pressor responses (21 +/- 2 mmHg). ATZ icv or iv and H2O2 icv injected alone produced no effect on baseline arterial pressure. The treatments also produced no significant change of heart rate. The results show that ATZ icv or iv reduced the pressor responses to icv carbachol, suggesting that endogenous H2O2 acting centrally inhibits the pressor mechanisms (sympathoactivation and/or vasopressin release) activated by central cholinergic stimulation.

A double-network anion exchange membrane (TA/AT-PEK/PVA-x) was prepared by Br-PEK and PVA, 3-amino-1,2,4 triazole forms a cross-linking structure with PVA under the action of 1,4-phthalaldehyde and then triazole can be linked with Br-PEK. The structure of membranes was verified by FT-IR. The composite membrane is uniform and smooth can be seen from the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and exhibit good hydrophilic/hydrophobic micro-phase separation structure proved by Transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The ionic conductivity of TA/AT-PEK/PVA-0.15 is 0.062 S/cm at 80 degrees C. With the addition of PVA within a certain range, the water uptake, swelling ratio hydroxide conductivity and alkaline stability are increase. The membranes are more flexible. After immersing in 4M NaOH solutions for 240 h at 80 degrees C, it remains at least 65% of its initial hydroxide ion conductivity of TA/AT-PEK/PVA-0.3 membrane. With the increasing number of water molecules solvating the hydroxide, its nucleophilicity and basicity were hindered, which enhance alkaline stability of anion exchange membranes.

Five novel rhodium(II) complexes of general formula [Rh-2(mu-OOCCH3)(4)L-2], where L is a triazolopyrimidine derivative, in particular dimethyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (dmtp) for (1), 5,7-diethyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5a]pyrimidine (detp) for (2), 7-isobutyl-5-methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (ibmtp) for (3), 7-hydroxy-5methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (HmtpO) for (4) and 5,7-ditertbutyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (dbtp) for (5) are reported. These first representatives of paddle-wheel dirhodium complexes with triazolopyrimidines have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Three of the new complexes (1), (2) and (5) were thoroughly screened in vitro for their cytotoxicity against human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and L929 murine fibroblast cells. Favorably, they show significantly less effective inhibition on the cell growth of L929 than cisplatin under identical conditions. Complexes (1) and (5) display moderate cytotoxic activity (IC50 = 16.3-21.5 mu M) against MCF-7 cells which is induced via reactive oxygen species-independent pathways. Extensive studies of rhodium complexes (1), (2) and (5) against microorganisms have shown that the tested compounds exhibit antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) while (5) significantly inhibited the growth of Malassezia furfur. The highest antibacterial, and antifungal activity, was observed for (5).

Carbon nitride (CN) materials are considered as promising photocatalysts due to the advantages of easy availability and visible light absorption. However, wide band gap and high recombination rates of electron-hole pairs of conventional CN materials remain the bottleneck of the photocatalysts. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient strategy to narrow band gap of CN and accelerate its charge transfer. In addition, the introduction of nitrogen (N) vacancies is an efficient strategy to narrow band gap and reduce recombination rates of electron-hole pairs. Herein, a novel triazole ring-based graphite carbon nitride (g-CN) is developed by one step pathway of NaOH-assisted condensation of triazole rings for the first time. It is found that NaOH can control N vacancies and band gap of g-C3Nx. Meanwhile, the N vacancies of g-CN, gradually increase with the increasing concentration of NaOH in the range of 0.005-0.1 g, suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The proposed g-C3N5 exhibits outstanding photocatalytical and photoelectrochemical performance. Therefore, the study highlights the significance of N vacancies in enhancing the photocatalytical and photoelectrochemical performance of promising g-C3N5. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
